Bodhassage
Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field.
Iíll meet you there.
- Rumi
Bodhassage is a unique and multidimensional form of bodywork developed by international somatic educator Michael Gibian. This potent modality has itís roots in the healing practices of ancient India, Thailand and China, while drawing inspiration from contemporary and emerging techniques. Bodhassage consists of three primary methods of interacting with the body. The first is the use of various body tools to compress muscle, connective tissue, bone and energetic pathways. The second aspect of Bodhassage is acupressure applied to superficial locations along the bodyís meridians using the thumbs, elbows and other body tools. Thirdly and perhaps most importantly is the guiding of the recipientís body into passive, sustained Yoga postures.

Underlying the practice of Bodhassage is the conscious cultivation and application of Buddhaís "four jewels": Loving Kindness, Compassion, Equanimity and Joy. With an altruistic intention, the practitioner has the opportunity to awaken the four jewels within. Once the heart is opened, these four divine states can flow freely between practitioner and recipient giving rise to the state of ìno giver, no receiverî. Along with the four jewels, practicing with conscious attention to what one is doing, being mindful of the consequences of oneís actions and surrendering to things as they are constitute the four pillars of Bodhassage.

Bodhassage has been found to promote many profound benefits for the body, mind and spirit. These may include:
  • release of emotional blocks
  • therapeutic benefits for all 11 of the bodyís systems
  • an alignment of the body, mind and spirit complex
  • increase in the flow of chi, blood and lymph
  • parasympathetic domination (relaxation response)
  • increasing range of motion
  • awakening of the bodyís healing mechanisms
  • greater self-awareness for both recipient and practitioner
  • improved immunity
  • ease, balance and contentment

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT
MICHAEL GIBIANíS BODHASSAGE...

Bodhassage gives me the feeling I get after an hour of Yoga but it only requires the amount of exertion it takes to have a massage. Michael pulls my limbs while I breathe into the stretches, feeling energized and more content than by any other means of bodywork. I was a shiatsu masseuse for many years and have received weekly massages for twenty years (everything from stone therapy to deep tissue). This form of physical therapy is made all the more special by Michaelís energy and expertise. No matter where I travel to, Iíve not found anyone who can do it better!

- Cheryl Tomchin, MA

Michael brings a powerful sense of focus, fluidity and grace to his work with students.

- Katie Mickey, director, Body Therapy Institute

Michael is a master at what he does! Itís been a pleasure and an honor to be his student.
